SAUNDERS GROVE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
Author: Brenda Lassiter
Subject: Bishop Mason Earns State award

The Ghostbusters movie made the catch phrase "Who Ya Gonna Call?" popular in the 1980's.   In Perquimans County, today the phrase "Who Ya Gonna Call?" carries an entirely different connotation.

"Who Ya Gonna Call?"  -- let's call Chairman Landon B. Mason to assist.  This is a customary and frequent request of teachers, administrators and the Superintendent in Perquimans County Schools. Bishop Mason serves as the Chairman of The Ministers' Council for Education in Perquimans County.

The Ministers' Council for Education links education, church, community and agency resources to provide services for dropouts and those students who are potential dropouts.  Under the leadership of Mason, The Ministers' Council strives to promote and support the Perquimans County School System in meeting the needs of all students.  Founded in 1999, Bishop Mason has served as chairman since 2002.  The Council meets monthly with the superintendent, principals and administrators of the schools to listen to concerns and needs.

Under the guidance of the founding members and Chairman Mason, prayer around the flagpole is held at each of the schools in Perquimans County on Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m.  Ministers, parents and community leaders are encouraged to pray for students and staff of Perquimans County Schools and all other schools across the state of North Carolina.

Through the leadership of Bishop Mason and The Ministers' Council, numerous volunteers are recruited through the churches in the community.  Parishioners serve as tutors, testing proctors and buddies throughout our school district.  It (the Council) also takes the lead in community events like the National Day of Prayer and the Baccalaureate Service for high school seniors and their families.

This past school year, Perquimans County Schools lost three of its students.  Two were tragically killed in an automobile accident while the other fell victim to a drive-by shooting. Bishop Mason and other ministers were called upon to serve as counselors to help students and staff cope during the tragic events.

Bishop Mason's dedication to students, parents, staff and community residents is noteworthy. He volunteers at Perquimans County Schools on a regular basis, serves on numerous school and community advisory committees and is only a phone call away when needed.  Because of his continuous support and involvement in the community and schools, he is the recipient of the 2005 North Carolina Association of Community Educator's Mary Jane Kistler Volunteer Award.
